As stipulated by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (Government of India), the phased catchment area Treatment, compensatory afforestation, command area development, survey of flora, fauna and carrying capacity, seismicity and health aspects, are some of the environmental safeguard measures that are to be planned and implemented pari-passu with the progress of work on Sardar Sarovar Project. Total catchment area of Sardar Sarovar Dam below Indira Sagar Project is 2442440 hectares, out of which 688410 hectare have been identified as critically degraded having silt yield index of 1200 and above. The area directly draining into Sardar Sarovar Reservoir, which works out to 175565 hectares, is to be treated under SSP. However, the area planned to be treated is 179180 ha as per the details given below:
Total area for compensatory afforestation is 46355 ha comprising of 13950 ha in Gujarat, 23668 ha in Maharashtra and 8737 ha in Madhya Pradesh. Several studies related to the command area development; flora, fauna and carrying capacity; environmental management plans; fisheries development plans; health profile of villages; reservoir induced seismicity; and rim stability etc. have been carried out by the concerned state governments. The implementation of Environmental related works of Sardar Sarovar Project is being monitored by a sub-group of the Narmada Control Authority under the Chairmanship of Secretary, Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India. |
